Buttocks Lift

About the Procedure

The butt lift procedure is performed to enhance the shape and firmness of a patient’s buttocks. It is usually done after a patient loses weight, or on older patients who have lost elasticity and volume in this area. The procedure takes about 2 to 3 hours. Patients are released within 2 days of the procedure.

A butt lift is done one of two ways:
  1. By removing excess skin and tightening it above the top part of the buttocks, which will help lift the buttocks.
  2. With fat injections or implants, also known as a Brazilian butt lift. The fat injections give the butt more projection, volume and lift.
A butt lift is one of a number of body contouring procedures that provides reliable and dramatic results. It reduces excess skin and fat from the buttocks. However, it will not reduce the actual size of the butt. It should also not substitute a sensible diet. It is merely a cosmetic fix used following a dramatic weight loss. The surgeon will want to be sure that the patient's weight is stable, that they are fit and healthy, have elastic skin and realistic expectations.

What to Know Before the Procedure

The buttock lift surgery uses general anesthesia. Surgeons harvest fat from the back, abdomen, hips or thighs. Once the fat is removed, they are purified, as only the best fat tissue is injected into the gluteal area. Surgeons inject fat at various depths to create a fuller, rounder butt.

The butt lift can be done with “twilight” anesthesia or general anesthesia. An ellipse of skin and fat is removed from the upper part of the buttock at the junction of the lower back. Skilled surgeons can hide the scar so that it is not even seen with a bikini bathing suit. The butt lift can easily be done as an out-patient procedure.

What to Know After the Procedure

After the butt lift, the patient is taken to recovery, where their vitals are monitored carefully. Once the vitals are stable, the patient is moved to a regular hospital room. After the butt lift procedure, patients should not sit directly on the butt for 3 weeks, to help promote healing and ensure maximum desired result. Patients will also be required to wear a compression garment to reduce swelling and bruise after the procedure.

If you Need to Travel Outside of your Local Hospital

Because of the nature of the procedure it is recommended that patients can travel 2 weeks prior to surgery and stay a minimum of 2 weeks after. For some people the amount of time required may make international options prohibitive, but for others the cost savings may outweigh that time requirement. Speak with your surgeon to discuss any concerns you may have regarding pre and post-operative care.
