Dental Crowns

About the Procedure

The crown is the visible part of the tooth, covered in enamel. If this natural crown becomes sufficiently damaged, a dental crown may be used. Dental crowns can protect the tooth, prevent further damage, and create a more aesthetically pleasing look. Crowns are an option when veneers or other dental implants are not, due to previous root canals or damage to the mouth. Your dentist can help you decide if you are a better candidate for a dental implant or a crown, or for another procedure to repair a damaged tooth.

Crowns will also be used to attach a dental bridge to replace a missing tooth, and may be used in cosmetic dentistry. There are dentists who specialize in cosmetic dental work, and will be able to provide photos of past work. It is important to select a talented dentist who works with a skilled lab to ensure the best aesthetic results.

What to Know Before the Procedure

Crowns are generally made of one of three materials: gold, ceramic, or porcelain and metal. Your dentist can help you to choose which material is right for you.

A crown often takes two dental visits to have put in. During the first visit, the dentist will usually take a mold of the area to ensure that the crown fits in with the surrounding teeth in terms of shape and size. The dentist will also let you know in more detail the steps that will be taken when the crown is affixed. If a temporary crown is to be used, the dentist will insert it at this appointment, as well as give you care instructions to ensure that the temporary crown is able to best protect your teeth. During the second visit, the crown will be fitted and bonded to the existing tooth. The dentist will go over after-care at this time.

Newer technology is allowing some dentists to create the crown on the same day as the consultation. If your dentist has access to this technology, both parts of the procedure may be performed on the same day.

What to Know After the Procedure

As with all dental procedures, it is important to follow good oral hygiene after the procedure to allow for the crown to properly protect your teeth. In addition to regular brushing and flossing, there may be additional daily cleaning necessary in order to preserve the crown and prevent further damage. In addition, it is important to avoid activities that may damage the crown, such as chewing ice or grinding teeth.

If you Need to Travel Outside of your Local Hospital

Having a dental crown put in can take up to a few days and multiple visits at some dentists and a single visit at others. When making the decision between having the procedure done domestically or internationally you should speak with dentists to find out how they do the procedure and how many visits would be required. Along with that information you should evaluate overall costs for the procedure and travel and be sure to look at pictures of the dentist’s past work. If having the procedure done internationally is desired be sure to speak with your dentist about how they handle follow-up procedures in the event that they are required.
