Dermabrasion (Skin Refinishing)
About the Procedure
Dermabrasion can improve the look of facial skin that has scarred caused by accidents or previous surgery. It can also smooth out fine wrinkles, like those around the mouth. Dermabrasion can also remove precancerous growths. It can also be used for acne scar removal or acne control. It can be performed on small patches of skin, for acne control, or on the entire face. It can be performed alone, or with a facelift or chemical peel. What to Know Before the Procedure
The surgeon will review medical history and conduct a routine examination. He/she will also photograph the face and explain the procedure, risks, benefits, recovery and costs. Insurance typically doesn’t cover cosmetic surgery. However, if dermabrasion is used to remove precancerous skin growths or extensive scars, insurance may cover it.The surgeon provides instructions on the care and treatment of skin before surgery. Smokers will be asked to refrain from smoking for a week or two before and after surgery, because it decreases blood circulation and slows down healing. The patient may have to be driven home and assisted after the surgery. The procedure is performed in a surgeon’s office, out-patient surgery center or hospital, usually on an out-patient basis.
Dermabrasion may be performed under local anesthesia and with a sedative. The patient is awake but relaxed, and feels minimal discomfort. The procedure usually takes a few minutes to an hour and a half, depending on how much skin is being treated. It may need to be done in stages, if scarring is deep or a large area of skin is treated.
What to Know After the Procedure
After dermabrasion, the skin will be red and swollen. Eating and talking may be difficult. The patient may feel tingling, burning, or aching, which can be controlled with medications. The swelling will begin to diminish in a few days to a week.A scab or crust forms over the treated area as it heals. This will reveal a new layer of tight, pink skin underneath. The skin may itch as it starts to grow. An ointment can alleviate the discomfort, and, if applied immediately after surgery, little or no scab will form. It is very important to follow the doctor’s instructions to ensure the best possible results. Patients can return to work in about two weeks but should avoid any activity that could cause trauma to the face for at least two weeks. More rigorous activity should be avoided for four to six weeks. Sun, wind and chlorinated water should be avoided for at least four weeks.
If you Need to Travel Outside of your Local Hospital
Dermabrasion can enhance facial appearance and boost self-confidence. It is normally safe when performed by a qualified, experienced physician. The most common risk with a dermabrasion is a change in skin pigmentation, permanent darkening of the skin, or blotchy skin, usually due to sun exposure. Infection and scarring are rare with this type of treatment but they are possible. A patient can reduce their risks by choosing a qualified plastic surgeon and following their instructions.DOCTORS PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE
