Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

About the Procedure

Gynecomastia is another term for extra male breast fat. Male breast reduction surgery is used to treat this condition that plagues men via either liposuction or removal of the breast tissue, depending on the cause of the enlargement. A surgeon performs liposuction to remove the excess fat tissue. In the instance of excess skin or glandular tissue, an excision will be performed whereby the surgeon directly removes the tissue via an incision. Excision allows for contouring of the breast, areola and other features to transform “man boobs” to a more regular appearance. Scarring may occur, however, in most cases, the surgeon can use the body’s natural contours to reduce the possibility of scarring.

What to Know Before the Procedure

During liposuction of male breasts, an incision allows a thin tube to be inserted and remove fat tissue. Incisions are done very carefully so that scarring will be minimal. Fluid and blood may be lost along with fat, but will be replaced with intravenous fluids during and after surgery. Liposuction will permanently remove the fat cells, however, if a patient gains significant weight, the remaining fat cells may increase in size.

During an excision, the surgeon removes breast tissue via one or more incisions. Incision patterns are determined based on the particular demands of the surgery, but, just as with liposuction, these are done as inconspicuously as possible. The surgeon removes tissue through an incision with a scalpel.

In some cases, both liposuction and excision are performed, in which case, the surgeon will use the same incisions to reduce the amount of scar tissue. Both liposuction and excision of male breasts are usually done in an out-patient setting under general anesthesia, or sedation with local anesthesia. The patient can leave the hospital a few hours after the procedure. Stitches can be removed after 7-14 days.

What to Know After the Procedure

Usually, the male breast reduction patient will need a compression garment or elastic bandages to compress the skin and control swelling. If needed, small temporary drains will be used to help remove any extra fluids. It can take up to three months after the surgery for the swelling to fully dissipate. If a healthy lifestyle and weight are maintained, the results will not change. However, the results may be affected by significant weight gain.

If you Need to Travel Outside of your Local Hospital
