Type 1 and type 2 Diabetes is considered as a pandemic disease. A traitor, illness progresses on a slow phase and patient who’s suffering from it don’t really know they have one, once found the damage to the pancreas and other organs are already irreversible. Diabetes prevalence around the world is continuously rising. According to American Diabetes Association almost seven million people don’t know they have the disease and about 18.8 million were diagnosed and 79 million people have border line diabetes (Pre diabetes). There are numerous risk factors to watch out for like Age, Polycystic ovary syndrome, Family history, History of gestational diabetes, High blood pressure, race and ethnicity, Insulin resistance, Obesity or being overweight, and genetics.
If left untreated or poorly managed, diabetes can impair multiple organ functions and can lead to complications such as Heart disease ,stroke, High Blood Pressure, Kidney Disease, Neuropathy, and Blindness to name a few.
Symptoms of Diabetes are vague so screening is very important to prevent if not decrease the effects of the disease.
Symptoms are as follows:

- Fatigue and Irritability.
- Blurred Vision.
- Numbness and Tingling sensation on hands and feet.

To confirm the diagnosis your doctor will require you to undergo some test such as Fasting Plasma Glucose also known as fasting blood sugar test. The procedure is commonly used to diagnose diabetes by measuring the sugar levels in the blood.
The blood will be drawn from patient and will be sent to the laboratory to measure the blood glucose level. The result will be interpreted by doctors.
Result of Fasting blood glucose will make the diagnosis concrete
- 100 mg/dL (or 5.5 mmol/L) or below - Normal
- Between 100 - 125 mg/dL (5.5 - 7.0 mmol/L) – Pre Diabetes
- 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher – Diabetes
Once Diabetes is confirmed, proper management is needed to avoid dreadful complications. Scheduled visit to your physician is important to manage the disease properly. The goal of planned visit is to control blood sugar level, blood pressure, and prevent complications.
In the scheduled visit, doctors will assess your blood pressure, auscultation of the heart and lungs, examining of the feet, health education about nutrition, proper diet, exercise, etc. after the assessment, physician will fill out the Diabetes management report card and he will explain it to his patient. The doctor will plan another scheduled visit depending on his assessment.
