Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

About the Procedure

A “tummy tuck” (medically referred to as an abdominoplasty), is a form of cosmetic surgery for patients looking to tighten and contour their abdomen. It is an extensive process that produces dramatic results which are permanent in nature. Most often, people who seek out such a procedure have either recently given birth or undergone major weight loss and as a result have sagging skin and loosened muscular structure. In the case of the former, an abdominoplasty is often done along with some form of breast enhancement surgery, a combination colloquially referred to as a “mommy makeover”.

The process begins with a long, horizontal incision made just above the pubis. This incision will extend from hip to hip. Next, a circular incision is made around the belly button (navel) to allow all the surrounding skin to be lifted. The skin is then separated from the underlying muscle. The surgeon will then tighten and shape the muscular structure with the use of heavy grade medical sutures. Then excess fat tissue is removed from the region. A large flap of the abdominal skin is cut off from the bottom section, including the hole that housed the navel. A new hole is cut in the abdominal skin for the navel to fit into. All excess fluid is drained from the surgical area and the skin is then placed back onto the muscle and the incisions closed.

This is an example of what is known as a full abdominoplasty. For people looking to achieve less dramatic results, a partial abdominoplasty may be the best route. The process is similar, but less extensive, with smaller incisions and no need for a new navel.

What to Know Before the Procedure

Abdominoplasty is a major form of surgery that should not be undertaken lightly. As with all forms of cosmetic surgery it is vitally important that you have a clear conception of how you would like to look after the procedure and that you clearly communicate this desire to your surgeon. Due to the extensive nature of the procedure you should seek out a surgeon who is not only properly certified, but who has performed the surgery many times with favorable results and does so frequently. Choosing the right surgeon to work with can make a world of difference when undergoing such a major surgical process.

Plan in advance for an extensive recovery period. Many patients need as much as a month off from work to recover. As the procedure is performed under heavy anesthesia be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home. Operating a motor vehicle is not advisable for the first 24 hours after surgery. If you live alone you should also arrange for someone to stay with you for the first couple of days after surgery as you may require assistance doing simple tasks. Installing a hand-held shower head is advisable in order to reduce the need to bend and move while bathing. Take every step you can before the surgery to prepare your place of living in such a way that will make your recovery period easier for you.

Proper healing of the incisions and the surrounding tissue is vital. Because of this, it is required that smokers refrain from all forms of nicotine for 2 weeks before the surgery as it interferes with the body's healing process.

If you plan on losing large amounts of weight or having children, you should wait until after these events to have an abdominoplasty performed.

What to Know After the Procedure

Swelling and pain around the surgical area are completely normal and should be expected. To alleviate this, your doctor will supply you with a support band to wear around the incision, to ease the stress on it and help it heal quicker. You may also have pain killers prescribed. While, vigorous activity should be completely avoided for at least 6 weeks, you should try to walk as much as possible, especially within the first 72 hours. This actually promotes better healing and prevents blood clots.

Due to the severity of the incisions made, infection is a very real threat after the operation. You may be prescribed anti-biotics by your doctor. It is vital that you follow any and all instructions given to you by your doctor regarding how to care for your bandages and other dressings. Doing so will ensure proper healing and safety from infection. Should you notice bleeding, discharge or a rise in your temperature, inform your doctor immediately as these can be early signs of infection.

It is worth noting that even once the lateral incision across your abdomen heals it will leave a visible scar. While it may go down a bit after 3-6 months, it is permanent and will never fully fade from visibility.

If you Need to Travel Outside of your Local Hospital

Despite its extensive nature, there are many plastic surgeons qualified to perform this procedure safely in both domestic and foreign markets. As one of the highest costing cosmetic procedures, having the procedure done overseas can be greatly beneficial. Keep in mind however, that after the procedure you should allow ample recovery time before attempting to endure the rigors of travel. Consult your doctor about your travel plans to determine what the safest option is for you.
